1789.[1968]. “VOYAGE FROM NEW SOUTH WALES TO CANTON IN THE YEAR 1788, WITH VIEWS OF THE ISLANDS DISCOVERED”. Published Amsterdam, N. Israel, New York, Da Capo Press, 1968. Lovely 4to size volume in almost mint condition in a clear protective mylar dustwrapper, with 85 pages plus 4 large folding views. This superb book is Number 44 in Bibliotheca Australiana Series, and is a facsimile reprint of 1789 first edition, bound in simile pale cream vellum with bright gilt titles on blue vignette on both cover and spine. Really excellent condition. Any shading on pics is just poor camera work, Gilbert was part of the establishment of the first European settlement at Port Jackson as commander of the Charlotte, the 335-ton First Fleet transport that carried over 100 convicts to Australia. Charlotte left Port Jackson on 6 May 1788 bound for China to take on a cargo of tea under charter to the East India Company. Gilbert also makes much mention of the constant fight to hold scurvy at bay.... 'we hauled. for fish as often as possible, but we found, that though this kind of food might palliate in some degree, the violence of the scurvy, it did not prove an effectual remedy.'
