Offered here is a rare 18th century MD(unsigned), 2pp. (both sides single sheet), 7" x 12", undated (circa 1790), concerning "The Grant of Ansly to be 10 Mile square to contain 45000 Acres, 26 Shares at 1200 Acres to a share except 1 Settlement lot which is 200 Acres each share to pay 12 Dol down & put on a Settler within three years from ye date of ye Charter, 37,000 Acres to Proprietors..." The list of prominent citizens here includes: Dr. Josiah Bartlett [and his two sons, Dr. Levi Bartlett and Dr. Ezra Bartlett], Capt. Caleb Wiggin, Capt. James Jewett, etc. On the verso is a land plat, with notations such as: "French Town," "Indian Town," "River St. Francois," "Connecticut River," "Latitude 48(?) Bounding ye US & Canada," "30 miles from Ansly to Indian Town a Creek runs thro Ansly & empties in St. F River..." This document was purchased by us at the historic June 24, 1989 on-site auction at the Josiah Bartlett homestead. JOSIAH BARTLETT (1729-1795) was the first [non-Royal] Governor of New Hampshire. Dr. Bartlett was the second person to sign the Declaration of Independence. He was also the founder of the New Hampshire Medical Society. Document may be in the hand of Levi Bartlett. Fold, some edge wear, light toning, otherwise very good.
