Antique handmade & hand forged wrought iron surface mount rim door lock with it's original key, key escutcheon, handle escutcheon and keeper in fine working condition and retaining it's original old natural oxidized surface, as found. New England , possibly Maine , 1790, probably earlier. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 4 lbs. Rim lock box 4 1/4" tall by 6 3/8" wide by 1 ¼" deep when mounted. Antique handmade & hand forged wrought iron surface mount rim door lock with it's original key, key escutcheon, handle escutcheon and keeper in fine working condition and retaining it's original old natural oxidized surface, as found . Of the objects we found in the home, this is the smartest (descriptive adj.) of the 18th century discoveries. Although antiquarians are often familiar with the shiloette of these early door locks from book study, we rarely encounter them, even more rarely acquire them and ...never... find a complete working set with the original key. Sturdy, rugged, beautifully crafted, fine working condition and complete, this set may be promptly installed on a door... and work. It is astonishing to us that we may make that pitch on this old door lock but t it is just as we found it and when we turn it's key, we DELIGHT so.... are very confident that the purchaser will too. The rim lock's bolt shoots straight out into the hand forged keeper when the key is turned and the lock is thrown. Above that, the latch bolt drops into the top of the keeper allowing door closure without locking. The stunning steel handles are pressed downward to open the latched door. The key must be used to lock and unlock the bolt. T is no "night bolt", a small sliding latch occasionally found on the brass specimens, on this rim lock. This is the rugged colonial Maine farm version w dainty city latches were not called for. This lock latched the front door of the colonial Maine home shut. It locked that door tight. It is made to withstand brutal assault from undesirable forced entry attempts. BUT: It looks fabulous TOO. No one can NOT "like it" for even the most antique hating hater will succumb to the classic big old key and when they see that it DOES TURN THE LOCK, the LOCK DOES LOCK and truly does lock the door with superior & intriguing hand forged solid iron quality 100%, they will, at least, mumble something positive. Everyone else will be troublesome to get to stop "playing with door lock". We will not find a fine and complete working set like this again so do not miss out for they do not appear in the market often. Very good as found condition. The lock is in perfect original as found condition with it's original natural old oxidized surface. This light oxidation makes the key turning a little stiff but lightest oiling will correct that no problem. The escutcheons and one edge of the lock box have old house paint on them from actual Maine farm front door usage. For those considering actually using the lock, we remind the rim lock & keeper fit upon a closed door & frame so require minimal fitting and tfore minimal permanent alteration to an existing door. Right out of a attic crawl space, lock set has appropriate surface oxidation, wear and soiling for it's age and from it's old Maine farm residence. Please see photographs. As found last month in an estate in Black Point , Maine . Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our other listings from this estate. This was in an attic crawl space. We have done nothing to it at all; it is just as we found it. It looks like good one to us! We offer this classic early hand forged door lock set including it's original key for $4.99 NR..
