1792 leather FISH Whales INSECTS 44 copper engravings ….1792 leather bound volume III only (of three volume set) containing 44 full page copper engravings of fish (including dolphins and whales) and insects -- A NEW SYSTEM OF THE NATURAL HISTORY OF QUADRUPEDS, BIRDS, FISHES AND INSECTS. The glory of the book is marvelous engravings, though the text is fascinating as well, which detailed information on the lives, habit and biology of the fish and insects of the world, such as it was known in 1792. Here, for example, is in extract from the section on the “grampus” – now known as the orca whale…. “The grampus is of all the cetaceous fish the most fierce and voracious; it does not even spare the porpoise and whale, which are animals of its own order and of superior size; the latter of these fish it is said to tear and mangle in such a manner with its teeth, that it bellows like a bull from the pain of its wounds.
