Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States , Part I Written by: Baron von Steuben Printed by: Charles Cist, No. 104 Philadelphia - North Second-Street, M,DCC,XCV (1795) Details about this particular book: BACK PAGE - Shelton F. Leakes name appears to be signed on the last page. Not sure if it’s his autograph or if someone just wrote his name? He was a politician from Virginia who lived from 1812-1884, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1845-1847 & from 1859-1861. From 1852-1856 he was Lieutenant Governor of Virginia . FIRST PAGE - Cornelius Thomas appears to have been originally issued this book, he signed his name twice on the first page. Could not gath er conclusive evidence of who he was, etc. SECOND PAGE reads: In CONGRESS 29 th March 1779 , CONGRESS judging it of the greatest importance to prescribe some invariable rules for the order and discipline of the troops, especially for the purpose of introducing an uniformity in their formation and maneuvers, and in the service of the camp. ORDERED, That the following regulations be observed by all the troops of the United States , and that all general and other officers cause the same to be executed with all possible exactness. BY Order, JOHN JAY, President Attest: Charles Thompson, Secretary More on the book: Originally entitled "Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States ," it became commonly known as the army's "blue book." The Revolutionary War Drill Manual was written by Major General Friedrich von Steuben in 1778 and 1779, during the American Revolution. Commissioned to train troops at Valley Forge , Steuben formed a model drill company of 100 men, and published his drill instructions in a manual that was widely distributed throughout the Continental Army. This helped the army overcome many of the obstacles they encountered in the Revolutionary War. It remained the official U.S. military guide until 1812. Condition: Used, See pictures for details. Pages have help up pretty well other than coloring. The binding is failing at the bottom of the book, still holding strong on the top bind. There are 8 plates with this book, there are two that have the following issues: Plate 2 is torn after the first 3.5”. Plate 6 is missing in it’s entirety. Pencil writing on last few pages, along with the name Shelton F. Leakes there are also notes about the number bushels of peas and a few other equations.
