The Nautical Almanac and Astronomical Ephemeris for the Year 1803. Published by Order of the Commissioners of Longitude . London: Printed by C. Buckton, Great Pulteney Street; and Sold by P. Elmsly, Strand, Bookseller to the Said Commissioners.. 1796. Price Three Shillings and Sixpence. Original ? blue paper wrappers. 9 1/8 by 6 inches. (xvi), 162 pages followed by a 10 page catalog. All edges uncut. Covers soiled and worn at edges, relatively NEW paper spine. Wear to edges of text block. Except for the signature on the title page and a small red tax stamp (Two Pence) on the back of the title page, no other markings. Please see the photographs, which can be enlarged and are part of the description. Signed by Thomas Truxtun (1755 - 1822) on the title page. He was a highly successful privateer during the Revolutionary War and in 1786 commanded one of the first American ships to engage in trade with China. After overseeing its construction, Truxtun was captain of the USS Constellation and in 1799 and 1800 fought several engagements with the French during the United States' Quasi War with that country. He retired from the Navy in 1800 and lived in Perth Amboy, New Jersey and later Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He published several then well known books concerning navigation and naval tactics.
