This listing is special because it has a handsome leather binding, a large fold out map, and a clean text.It is a FINE 1799 scarce copy of the first edition, first issue of Rochefoucauld's Travels through the United States and Canada. A second volume was printed later and then issued as volume one and two. This copy is a first issue because it does not have volume one on the title page, and it also spells the author's name wrong. The volume has a 17 3/4 X 14 inch foldout map on heavy paper engraved by Smith and Jones, and it has been handsomely rebound in blind stamped and gilt tooled leather. Neuman,London, Printed for R. Phillips, 1799, 1st ed. 1st issue, map, title,[i-iii], iv - xiii, translator's & author's Prefaces, errata, text 542pp., [12pp.] unpaginated index, 2pp. ads.. Rochefoucauld (1747 - 1827) was a social reformer, educator, and interested in scientific agriculture. He took part in the early part of the French Revolution but wanted to keep the King as the titular head of the government. After the storming of the Tuileries Palace he fled to England, and while t, made the trip to America. He was interested in the commerce and ideas on education and agriculture in the U. S. and devotes time to those subjects in the text. BINDING: Rich brown polished calf, gilt flueron rectangle within frame of blind stamped fluerons and gilt ruled lines on front and rear boards, six paneled spine with gilt ruled raised bands, red leather title label. (see scans). __________ CONDITION: Binding is FINE, and the text, although having some light offset, is generally clean and bright with only some light foxing first few leaves front and rear and stained endpapers. __________ COMMENTS: An important book on America at the turn of the 18th century. The Duke has a keen eye and mind.
