What I am selling today in this auction is a 1632 map of France and all of it's postal routes. This map was ordered to be made by King Louis XIII to accompany the creation of the first federally regulated highway and post route system. France was one of the first nations in the world to establish a federal post office, their creation of roads maintained and protected by the government led to hugely increased travel during this period. This map is the very first to show all of the roads of France. Prior to this, most maps did not feature roads as they were more or less unofficial trails that led between towns. This map is of particular historic value because it's the first "official" road map in Europe. It is also generally considered the piece that marked the beginning of the French golden-era of cartography. Before this cartography was almost entirely dominated by the Dutch. It's a beautiful piece and the original coloring has held up very well for it's age. It is in very good condition and comes in a sealed frame that it has likely been in for a long time.
