18-19C CARVED MARBLE BAS RELIEF HEAD GEORGE WASHINGTON This listing is for a 18th or 19th century marble or white granite bas relief life size carving of George Washington. The marble is unsigned and undated. One of the most interesting facets of this carving is that Washington is wearing a laurel wreath in his hair. After Washington's success in winning American independence t were some that called him the American Emperor. T were others who wanted to crown Washington as a king like figure. Washington wanted nothing to do with being associated in any way with royalty. After all this is what the revolution was all about, getting rid of the tyranny of a monarchy. So this carving becomes very interesting. The carving is about life size. It measures 15" long and is 9.5" wide, and is 3" at it's deepest. It is carved from one piece of either white marble or white granite. My guess is that it is granite as it is extremely hard, and has flakes of mica. Please be assured this is not a composition pressed stone piece, but carved stone. The carving is masterfully done, please see the many photographs. It is in excellent condition with the exception of a repaired crack to Washington's pigtail. I do believe this carving is probably late 18th early 19th century. T is no reserve. Please see my other auctions for other interesting antiques.
