Ship wheels are among the best known symbols of the sea. This Brass 18" Ships Wheel w/ Wood Handles is the ideal nautical decoration. John Hastie & Co. Ltd. was a steering gear manufacturer in Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland. The firm was founded by John Hastie, an engineer and millwright, in 1845. Hastie patented the first self-holding steering gear in 1853, which the firm produced. In 1870, the company added steam steering gears to their product line, and in the 1910s, electric hydraulic steering gear. In 1898, the company added “Ltd.” to its name. The company was acquired by The Weir Group and Lithgows Ltd. in 1972, and operated as an independent company until its dissolution in 1991. Your are bidding on an original John Hastie brass and wood wheel measuring 18” spoke to spoke that was made in the first half of 19 th century. It is in “as found condition” (not polished etc.). It is in excellent condition and the brass has a nice patina. It’s not known what vessel it came off of but it definitely saw “sea” duty. It would probably clean up and shine nicely with the proper techniques. We are leaving it as found. This ships wheel will compliment your Nautical collection.
