For bids is an estate find of an 18 piece Nativity set. This 1983 set is hand carved out or olive wood....native to the Holy Land. The camels measure 7 1/2 " tall. The tallest king (with the tall headpiece) is 8". T is the three piece holy family, the three kings, three shepards, three sheep, three camels, a cow and a donkey and then the creche. Joseph and one shepard are holding staffs that are intact. On the back side is written " Nativity From the Holy Lands of Jeruselam in 1983...Made of Olive Wood. Just aside from that is written "The Heirloom Line: and gives family names it was passed on to. You can see from the last entry it was meant to be passed further on. Who knows why things like this end up discarded. The flaws as far as I can tell are: one camel has part of a leg gone. The creche is in two sections: the top is seperate from the bottom. The back bottom piece is a tad bowed, but fits well with the top. It looks as if it was tacky glued together at one time. T is some tacky type glue residue at each side of the floor of the creche. Perhaps something was positioned t at one time. Tacky glue usually peels off easily. Fragrant olive wood has been used for carving since biblical times, a natural choice for this traditional nativity set.
