TO WHICH IS ANNEXED AN APPENDIX, CONTAINING AN ACCOUNT OF ILLNESS, DEATH, AND THE NATIONAL TRIBUTES OF RESPECT PAID TO HIS MEMORY, WITH A BIOGRAPHICAL OUTLINE OF HIS LIFE AND CHARACTER. By "THE EDITORS" (Russell & West?). "PRINTED FOR JOHN RUSSELL AND JOHN WEST", Boston , 1800. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 1 lbs. 8 1/8" tall by 5 1/8" wide by 7/8" thick. Original leather calf binding with an old & early leather calf re-hinging of the original leather calf covered boards retaining the original leather calf spine with it's red leather & gold printed spine label, original end papers and fly leaves present with faint pencil owner name "John Breck (?)" dated "1800" on the front free end paper head, 208 pp with 14 pp. subscriber list at the end, first edition. We found an attractive amount of loose old paper and books in the attic of this estate. We will be listing it all. As is common with Maine estates, the antiquarian book & ephemera is diverse for Maine folk "get" all sorts of books over time and ...never part with them. Each home always has a true smorgasbord of generations of accumulation. This is a scarce volume recording George Washington morsels that includes the printed versions of most well known Washington missives as well as a few more obscure ones and a notable amount of then contemporary comment by others including the 1783 "anonymous... artful and insidious" "address to the American Army" with Washington's reply. All considered, a handsome book full of solid Washington from-the-hand fact written very close to his time and including those who actually shared his company. Very good as found condition with light estate soiling. The noted above re-hinging is hard to see for it has been done so well and long ago it is not obvious. Otherwise the binding, the interior and the text are clean & crisp excepting normal minor spot foxing and age tone browning throughout. SCARCE . Please see photographs.
