RARE mid-1800's perfume bottle with GOLD PLATE OR BRASS top and label: "THE PERFUME OF GARDEN HELIOTROPE" Manufactured by Joseph Burnett & Co. Boston, Mass . (Burnett& Co. only made pure products. NOTE: I have included in my group of pictures a copy of an old magazine advertisement from the mid-1800's of the Heliotrope Perfume by Burnett & Co. I recently acquired this picture from a very nice acquaintance who has a collectors' book on antique bottles which included this advertisement in the book. If it is not quite all legible, the small printing underneath the bottle says: "Small Size, Gold Plated Sprinkler Top, .35". Then it goes on to list three other sizes with a glass stopper. I didn't know what Heliotrope was so I did some research and this is what I found out about the plant. Heliotrope is called the Cherry Pie Plant and is a perennial. The tiny vanilla-scented purple flowers have been used for hundreds of years to make perfumes and scented bath water. They are a compact flower with suede-like purple veined leaves which complement the wonderfully scented purple flowers. On the bottle label, the following is printed: "Manufactured by Joseph Burnett & Co. Boston, Mass" and "The Perfume of Garden Heliotrope." The Joseph Burnett Company made only pure products and was a well-known company. is some information about the Burnett Company: The Joseph Burnett Co. started in 1847 when he developed a vanilla extract for flavoring foods. This was a request from a wealthy prominent Boston woman to make a pure tasting vanilla flavoring as she had tasted in France. Mr. Burnett was a druggest and a chemist. Soon he had developed the Burnett's Pure Vanilla Flavoring which became world famous for it being pure. Joseph Burnett graduated from Pharmacy College in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1837. After mastering the making of pure, quality vanilla, Joseph Burnett earned a reputation for selling only products of the purest quality. He added other quality pure extracts and "remedies" in his business for sale as well as perfume, cologne and other pure body products. The round gold plate (or brass) sprinkler top has raised lettering and says: "JOS. BURNETT & CO.BOSTON". This bottle is very unique and special in that it has a this type of top with a tiny hole at the top for sprinkling out the perfume. It has a little "tube" going through the middle of a cork (in marvelous condition) that is inside the neck of the bottle. The cork almost looks like that its brand new in my opinion. The bottle, top and cork are all in great condition. Nothing broken, chipped or marked up. I believe it is hand blown glass also since t is a nice air bubble on the reverse side of the label. T is one small darker area on the top of the round gold (it says its Gold Plated but just in case I will also say maybe it is brass) top. I don't know if just a little area of wear, something on it or it just needs polishing. Either way, I wish not to touch it in anyway. I will leave that up to whomever ends up owning it because I know most people who collect antiques would rather clean the item, etc. themselves. On the backside opposite the label, t are words embossed which read: "BURNETT BOSTON". The perfume bottle no longer has the perfume in it. The label is mainly all t as well as all the lettering which are very readable. T is just a slight bit of the very righthand edge missing and a tiny, tiny piece at the top and a tiny piece on the top lefthand edge of the label. It measures 2-1/4" high x 4-1/4" around the middle.
