RARE mid-1800's perfume bottle with GOLD PLATE OR BRASS top and label: "THE PERFUME OF GARDEN HELIOTROPE" Manufactured by Joseph Burnett & Co. Boston, Mass . (Burnett& Co. only made pure products. NOTE: I have included in my group of pictures a copy of an old magazine advertisement from the mid-1800's of the Heliotrope Perfume by Burnett & Co. I recently acquired this picture from a very nice acquaintance who has a collectors' book on antique bottles which included this advertisement in the book. If it is not quite all legible, the small printing underneath the bottle says: "Small Size, Gold Plated Sprinkler Top, .35". Then it goes on to list three other sizes with a glass stopper. I didn't know what Heliotrope was so I did some research and this is what I found out about the plant. Heliotrope is called the Cherry Pie Plant and is a perennial. The tiny vanilla-scented purple flowers have been used for hundreds of years to make perfumes and scented bath water. They are a compact flower with suede-like purple veined leaves which complement the wonderfully scented purple flowers. On the bottle label,the following is printed: "Manufactured by Joseph Burnett & Co. Boston, Mass" and "The Perfume of Garden Heliotrope."
