Antique handmade japanned sheet iron tin folding nutmeg grater retaining it's original old dry surface. New England or Great Britain , 1800, probably earlier. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 1/4 lbs. Folded 3" long, Open 5 ¾" long by 1 1/8" diameter. Sheet iron tin cut, bent, soldered and japanned to form a folding nutmeg grater retaining it's original old surface. Finding an old veteran like this is just a pleasure! We found this loose in the attic w it was once inspected... and rejected... by a treasure hunter long ago after falling into disuse in the household. We were excited when the flashlight beam feel on this small jewel of days gone long ago by. Opening it we found no old nutmeg but do delight it the stamped tin grater. Originally a nutmeg or two would be carried in the cylinder. When called for the tin unfolded and the nutmeg was grated on the folding grater. Then all folded back up safe & sound. This one was well used and we bet it was pumpkin pie that saw the grater working at this time of year. Once a daily household spice, hand grated nutmeg is a legacy more than fact now. , from the late 18th century when grating defined a cook's elegance, is a truly scarce early tin grater. One encounters the mid 19th century graters, a plethora of gimmicky devices, but one rarely encounters these earlier pocket traveling graters. SCARCE. Very good as found condition. Aside from the wear to the japanning from use, normal surface oxidation to the tin and lightest appropriate wear, the nutmeg grater is in fine original condition. Please see photographs. As found last week in an attic of a coastal fishing farm near Friendship, Maine . Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our other listings from this estate. This was in the attic. We have done nothing to it at all; it is just as we found it. It looks like good one to us! We offer this scarce early tin nutmeg grater for $4.99 NR.
