This magnificent dish cover of Old Sheffield Plated Silver was made ca. 1800 by master silversmith Matthew Boulton, bearing his mark of the 8-pointed sun, double struck. The oval dome cover is encircled by robust gadrooning punctuated in 4 places with applied shell and acanthus decoration. Engraved on two sides is "Inniskilling VI.D" and a twin towered castle surmounted by the Union Jack - the crest of the Inniskilling (6th) Dragoons, a cavalry regiment formed in 1689 and named for Inniskilling, Northern Ireland. The dish cover rises to a ring handle of fluting and acanthus center-tied, all springing from two lion heads surrounded by plumes, shells, and acanthus leaves, the full height of the dish cover, including handle, reaching 11". This spectacular piece is offered by Chancery Lane Antiques for $4000.
