Up for auction is an Antique Black Lacquer Sewing Box with wonderful overall gold chonoiserie decoration from the early 1800's. The box is: 13 1/2" long, 10" wide & 5 1/2" high. T are bail handles on each side & the hinges are original & intact. T are keyholes present but I do not have the key. A drawer pulls out of the front of the box. See photo. This drawer is 9 1/4" across the front, it is 9" long from front to back & 1" deep. It has 6 compartments: One long, open compartment at the back 8 1/4" by 3 1/4". Three small open compartments on the right side. One long, narrow, open compartment on the left side which has a curved piece of gold painted wood in the bottom of it. In the center is a large square compartment with a hinged cover that is beautifully lacquered & gold painted. This cover is only connected to the drawer by one hinge. Both hinges are t but the nail has come out of the one on the left. This decorated cover lifts forward & can be supported in that position by 2 wooden arms that swing up from inside of the compartment. See photo. In the 3 small compartments are 3 ivory spools with thread. In the narrow gold lined compartment are 3 thin 4 1/2" long ivory sticks. When the top of the box is raised, a lift out tray is revealed. T are 15 comparments in this tray. The 3 compartments in the front also lift out. Five compartments have carved ivory pieces build in that hold ivory spools, ivory cylindrical covered boxes & other ivory sewing tools. T are 2 compartments with decorated covers that have carved ivory handles. I suspect the pin cushion in the removeable, front compartment may be a replacement as I think the original sink from that time would have worn away after all these years. My Father bought this box & gave it to my Mother 45 years ago. When my Mother came to live with me her things were in storage for a year while we searched for a bigger house to live in. I think it was during that time that the top of this box was damaged. See photo. T are cracks on each side of the top. Still it is a rare find with all the ivory sewing accessories & in good condition for a piece of this age. This is just one item from my own personal collection.
