This little side table has square head nails showing in its top and the drawer is pegged, which makes me think mid-1800's. The turned legs are uniform as in mass produced, which makes me think late-1800's. It appears to have been used as student-type desk, Judging from the marks left in it, it must have been used by a rather frustrated student. It has been refinished somewhere along the line. They seem to have tried to get as close to the raw wood as possible. Traces of an earlier reddish stain are visible in places. You know the old say ing about antiques, "If only they could talk..." Well, I have a feeling this one could talk your ear off. It apparently has led a very busy life although it is structurally very strong and sturdy--lots of character though.
