Original Estate bronze plaque of Prussian Field Marshall Helmuth Karl Bernard Graf von Moltke, 1800-1891, referred to by Historians as von Moltke the Elder to distinguish him from the much Later von Moltke of WWII. Prussian Field Marshal von Moltke was the Victorious commander in the pre Germany ~ Austro-Prussian and the Franco-Prussian wars and is regarded as one of the great strategists of the later half of the 1800's and the creator of the modern staff system of directing armies in the field. This is a late 1800's bronze plaque handsomely housed within an EarLy period frame with figural Brass Acorn Branch Spandrel Embellishment. Early Frame has carved beveled sides and a carved inside border which edges bronze. The Black Forest Acrorn branch is nicely 3 dimensional and earLy german. Overall bronze measures 9 and 3/16" wide, 9 and 5/16" tall, approximately 1" deep. Bronze is Signed below generals shoulder, Unfortunately the frame only allows a glimpse of the Font signature. 2 piece Frame is put together with tiny brass tacks and irregular nails with plaque sandwiched inbetween, so that removing plaque may damage frame. I will leave this mystery to the new owner. The early carved Wood Easel, bronze sits upon is Included in this auction and was purchased this Way. Very good Condition, frame has 2 tight age related hairlines that run through top of wood frame. Excellant antique Patina.
