Offered is a very nice example of an early American dough box with its original fitted lid, which is not hinged, but detached. This a very large dough box, used on a table top or a legged stand. This dough box dates from approximately 1815 to the mid 1800s. It is constructed with square nails which have recessed nicely into the aged wood. Square nails were manufactured after 1815 and the type of screws that were used were produced until about 1845. This box has its original red paint and the old dry surface that we like to see in a piece of this age....t are some dry wood cracks but these do not detract from the integrity of this early piece. One side of the box has a small area w some of the paint has rubbed off exposing the original wood. This occurred in my last move when the dough box was placed against another piece of furniture without proper padding......oops! This early dough box is a nice size......measuring approximately a tad over 37 inches long, 11 inches tall with the fitted lid, and about 16 inches deep. The inside and underneath part of the box, as well as the underneath side of the separate lid, display the natural wood, which has never been painted, varnished, or altered in any way. The fitted lid itself measures approximately 34 inches long by 15 inches wide, and about 1 inch thick. It has two separate pieces of wood nailed to the top from the underside of the lid to act as handles. Each handle measures about 12 inches long by about 1.5 inches high.
