1800s ENGLISH GRETNA GREEN ELOPING COUPLE PEWTER BOX Presented is a fine antique English pewter box. The rectangular box has a hinged lid that is engraved with a scene of a carriage pulled by four horses. The engraving above the carriage scene reads, "A Gentleman & Lady going to Gretna Green Post haste Yes Hip a hip Go it go it." Gretna Green was a small Scottish town that became legendary as a destination for eloping English couples because young couples could get married in Scotland without parental consent. Apparently this town was the Las Vegas of the early 1800s or late 1700s. I have never seen another box or souvenir from Gretna Green. The box is hallmarked on the underside with London and a cross over an X. T is also a small circular hallmark on the side of the box. This box was made in the first half of the 1800s, probably the 1820s or 1830s in London. The box is in great condition. It has some wear commensurate with age, but t are no dents, no splits, no breaks, and no repairs. The box measures 3 5/8 by 3 by 1 3/8 inches.
