Antique Primitive Pennsylvania For your Antique Redware Collection Details Description: A very nice piece of American folk art, an antique redware gallon size ovoid jug made in Pennsylvania. The jug is has a lead and manganese glaze giving it a dark brown and iridescent background. The ovoid shaped jug has a flat base with flared rounded sides and a broad rounded shoulder that tapers to a square molded collar. It has an applied arched handle mounted on the shoulder.Date: Mid 1800s. Origin: Southeastern Pennsylvania. Size: 1 3/4" in diameter at the top, 5 3/4" in diameter at the base, and is ~10 1/2" in height Maker: Unknown. Marks: None. Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Beautiful rich deep dark brown color glaze inside and out and a very nice ovoid shape. Condition: The jug is in very good condition given its age and utilitarian function. It has a tight hairline that is about 3" long on the base (see 5th photo at about 2:30) and extends along the side for about 3". It does have several chips on the base which can be seen in the photos. It also has glaze loss and small chips around the rim/collar. Moreover, the piece has considerable crazing. Finally, as is the case with all these primitive old redarware pieces, the jar has a few of the usual defects you would expect such as pops, unglazed areas and uneven spots. Despite all of that, the piece is solid and intact and displays very well. Because the piece is not perfect we are selling it AS IS with no reserve and with a low starting price. In Closing: This is an antique and beautiful ovoid jug of a nice size in fairly good condition, which seldom comes by. Definitely deserves a prominent spot in your redware collection.
