Stored in a blanket chest for approx. 150 yrs. or more this is a great Crib Quilt. Acquired at a private estate in Chester County, Pennsylvania. From research I found this is Quaker and Chester County was a heavily populated county in Penna. during the 1700 & 1800's of the Quaker community. All silk & quite colorful as you can see in the pics. The Quakers were known for their colorful, silk, quilts. This is very colorful with many silk blocks-each block is about 1 1/2" & there are so many. The scalloped border is stunning & the pics. show all the detail. The backing is striped in black & off-white silk strips with little ties which the attaching of the ties does not show through to the front. This is a finished quilt (no hand quilting on the top) & detail of the assembly is phenemonal-all hand pieced with the most amazing and fine hand stitches. There are 3 - 1/2 diamonds on the front which have become slightly un-attached & a couple of stiches would fix. At this area I noticed the adjoining patch & thought I saw machine stitches but turned out that the edge of the silk patches underneath were hand stitched to prevent fraying-incredible amount of handwork. This also showed me the filling which is very light & great-either wool or cotton. Great condition for the age but there are some age Blemishes-On the front just 3 patches that need to be blind stitched & some water marks in one corner which are shown in pics. On the back-some of the light silk is fraying here & there & there are also water/age marks. No fading or drying. Super for the age & history. It measures 48 inches by 54 inches.
