ITEM: Offered for your consideration on this auction is a very early and very beautiful wooden candle lantern, bowett or bowyt, or what some refer to as a barn lantern. This lantern has the wood corner pegged construction typical of the early forms of this lantern. Each corner, both top and bottom has wooden peg inserts. This construction technique was used to enable the replacement of broken panes of glass by removing the wooden pegs, removing the top, and then replacing the broken pane. As can be seen, this lantern has been used, but the use has created a very fine, aged patina that is typical of the best of this type of old wooden lantern. Please see the close up pictures and do not miss this opportunity to own a very beautiful, primitive piece of American lighting history!
A BIT OF ETYMOLOGY: T are many names for a lantern including bowett or alternatively spelled as bowyt. T are also the Latin names such as lanterne, Lucerna, or lanterna. The Dutch call them lampen and t are a variety of other names from other languages and times. For instance, the term lanthorn derives from the early use of thin pieces of animal horn as windows for the bowett, and is an obvious combination of the words lantern and horn into "lanthorn". MAKER: As is typical with this type of lantern, it is unmarked by a maker. I have looked at many of these lanterns and have never seen a marked example. DATE: Likely dates to the second quarter of the 19th century. MATERIAL: The lantern is of wood construction (type unknown), with a tin smoke bell or heat deflector, and a wire carrying or hanging handle. WEIGHT AND DIMENSIONS: This bowett weighs 21.35 ounces. It is 10 inches tall from the top of the tin smoke bell or deflector and is 4 inches on each side. CONDITION: As can be seen by the close up pictures, this lantern is in very good primitive condition. One of the door's wire hinges is missing and one of the glass panes is shorter than the others. The original wooden handle is still in the door, but the door must be opened carefully as it will hang a bit loose owing to the missing hinge. This could be repaired, but I have chosen to leave it alone and in original condition. It is unknown if the glass is original to the bowett. The lantern shows clear signs of being burned with scorch marks to the smoke hole and the topsides of the lantern. The top at some point in it's history also split, a common issue with this type of lantern, and the wood is now kept together with two metal clips. All of these condition issues are expected on a wooden lantern of this type, they add to the "patina" and they do not detract from what is a great example of early American lighting. Please examine the close up pictures to better evaluate and judge the condition of this lantern for yourselves. Last, please understand that the lantern is a genuine antique being over 100 years old and is not in new, unused condition. I will also post or email additional pictures upon request. Questions later than a day before the end of the auction may not be received in time to offer an answer.
