You are looking at an invaluable noble piece of history. I bought this piece at a State Sale as I am interested in Antiques only to do my research and realize how valuable was what i got. This is the DOUAY & RHEIMS HOLY BIBLE of the Catholic Church translatedfrom the Latin Vulgate and with Rev. Geo Leo Haydock's Notes and References Illustrated by F. C. HUSENBETH D.D
F.C Husenthbeth who was awarded the Doctor of Divinity by his Holiness in 1850 was one of the 1800 authors of Catholic books such as prayer books, breviaries, missals and vesperbooks . This Holy bible translated from the latin Vulgate has notes and References from Rev. Geo Leo Haydock's works contains major sections: I) THE ENTIRE CANONICAL SCRIPTURES According to the decree on the Council of Trent Translated from the Latin Vulgate: Diligently compared with the Hebrew, Greek and other editions in divers languages II) USEFUL NOTES Critical, Historical, Controversial and Explanatory selected from the most eminent commentators and most able judicious critics BY THE LATE, REV. GEO LEO HAYDOCK The text carefully collated with that of the original edition and the Annotations abridged BY THE VERY REV. F.C. HUSENBETH D.D., V.G To which is added A COMPREHENSIVE HISTORY OF THE BOOKS OF THE HOLY CATHOLIC BIBLE BY REV. BERNARD O'REILLY, L.D. (LAVAL) With a historical and chronological index, a table of the Epistles and the Gospels for all the Sundays and the Holy days throughout the year, and Devotional and Instructive matter The whole beautifully illustrated with numerous steel plates and other appropriate engravings The Dedication is signed by Thomas Haydock, brother to Geo Leo Haydock. The Notice is signed by F.C. Husenbeth the then Vicar General in the Eastern District of England and Canon of the English Chapter. The Preface to the reader is signed by Bernard Oreilly. This Bible contains Approbations of the Archbishops and Bishops of the Holy Catholic Church in America to Dr. Husenbeth's edition of the Holy Bible and Comentary. These approbations which have the copies of the Handwritten signatures of the Arch bishops and Bishops of NY, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Detroit, New Orleans, Hartford, Boston, Cleveland Nashville, Baltimaore, Chicago and Natchez. The cover of this More the 1000 pages Holy Bible is Leather engraved Custom made with a pair of engraved metal snap fit lock (see pics). This Bible measures 10" L X 12.5" H X 4" W The cover is detached and there normal minimal wear for its age. No pages are missing or torn. There are notes cut out new paper articles, convention batch (1913), and death announcements of 1930. There little things are probably from the original owner. I will provide additional pics if requested. The Doway or Douay Bible (Douay-Rheims bible) was the standard translation for English speaking Catholics. It was originally translated from the Latin Vulgate in the 16th century chiefly by George Martin, one of the first professors at the English Catholic College affiliated to the University of Douai. It was revised and newly annotated in the 18th century by Richard Challoner q.v. , a scholar from university of Douai. Shortly after Challoner’s death, Father Bernard MacMahon (1736?-1816) published further revisions of the Douay-Rheims Bible. Make an offer, you never know how much will tempt me.
