Illustrations of Masonry DESCRIPTION: Presented for auction is the original 1801 Edition of “Illustrations of Masonry” by William Preston. William Preston was an 18th Century freemason to which masons are indebted of what was the basis of the Masonic monitors of the present day. The story of his literary labors in the interest of the craft, and how they aided in making freemasonry one of the leading educational influences during the closing decades of the eighteenth century, is one of absorbing interest to every member in the fraternity. He discovered a vast body of traditional and historical lore in the old documents of the Craft, and begun modernizing the format of group meetings in such a way as to make ritual accessible, bringing a rudimentary knowledge of the arts and sciences to members of the Fraternity. Preston embarked upon detailed communication with Masons worldwide, so developing extensive knowledge of the Craft, and collecting the material that was to become his best-known book, Illustrations of Masonry .
