1802 History of MARINE ARCHITECTURE, by Charnock RARE
AN HISTORY OF MARINE ARCHITECTURE, by John Charnock. Printed in London by Nichols and Son, 1802.
Subtitled: An History of Marine Architecture including an Enlarged and Progressive View of the Nautical Regulations and Naval History, both Civil and Military, of all Nations, especially of Great Britain, derived Chiefly from Original Manuscripts, as well in Private Collections as in the Great Public Repositories and Deduced from the Earliest Period to the Present Time.
This is Volume III only, but this large and beautiful volume stands on its own. Each volume in this three volume series is Very Rare.
Professionally and beautifully rebound in leather covered boards, using 2 colors of leather, 1 for the spine and corners, one for the front and rear panels. The spine has 2 lovely red labels with gilt lettering and bands. Large format, 10" x 11.5", 426 pages. New endpapers, entire original book bound within, from Title-Page to page 436 that ends with the statement: "End of the Contents of the Third Volume".
Includes 45 beautiful engraved plates, one of which is a large fold-open illustration. The book calls for 46 plates, but in all copies I have seen t are actually only 45. It seems the printer double counted one of the plates (plate #23 has the title that is listed in the index for both plate #23 and plate #24). The plates are of various Spanish, French, British and Dutch warships, merchant vessels, frigates, galleys, etc. Each would be suitable for framing, but PLEASE do not disbound this book. It is too wonderful.
Condition: The rebound covers are beautiful. The inner pages of this book from 1802 are complete and in VERY GOOD condition, some creasing and a few small edge chips to the title-page; 2 early previous owner's signatures on the title-page; bookplate to the front pastedown; a bit (very little) age spotting and t; the fold-open plate (plate #9) has closed tears to the folds, most of which have been clear tape repaired on the verso; and that's about it. The pages are truly tight, bright, clean and unmarked. With the beautiful covers, beautiful plates, and bright pages, this copy is simply lovely.
SCARCE. When they can be found, complete volumes of this series tend to be very expensive. Few copies are as nice as this one!
