Up for auction is a 207-year old edition of the complete works of the Roman lyric poet Horace, printed entirely in Latin in Edinburgh in 1806. With notes by Gulielmus Baxterus (James Baxter) and various lectures and observations by Joseph Matthias Gesnerus. New Edition. Printed by Mundell, Doig & Stevenson in Edinburgh. 575 pages. Once a stately and lavish edition, with much of its past grandeur intact. Bound in full calf, with gilt-stamped insignias on front and rear cover: what appears to be a rose or carnation and crown motif on front, and what appears of be a crown and chainmail or armor motif on rear. Blind-stamped motif around perimeter of both covers; gilt-stamped detailing on inside perimeter of covers as well. Front cover is detached, but cover is attached to rear cover with long-ago buckram repair at head and foot of spine. Rear cover weak, but holding. Interior quite clean and bright, and unfoxed. Marbled page edges. Horse-themed bookplate of John William Whittaker of St. Johns College in Cambridge on inside front cover; seems to date from publication of book or shortly thereafter.
