c.1808 SAMUEL DAVIS /THOMAS DANIELL ORIG DRAWING 'FALLS ON RIVER' INDIA #9 Offered here is a nice and originalpencil and wash drawing attributed to Samuel Davis or Thomas Daniell. The image is titled lower in pencil at lower margin as ‘A beautiful Fall of the Sonk (?) River from between three stones at G Acll (?) ’ .This image depicts a view of two men, one with a turban holding a staff or walking stick seated near a small waterfall flowing between three boulders on a creek. The drawing is rendered on laid paper watermarked with a Ruse & Turners watermark crest . The image measure 9.5 inches (H) x 9.25 inches (W) and is mounted to an old mat with old cello tape on four corners. The drawing is washed (in places) gray with watercolor tint. The drawing is in very good condition, with minor edge toning as one would expect. A very nice, displayable and desirable image of a river scene in rural 19th century India. Provenance: This drawing is part of a lot of pencil and wash drawings once in Christie’s ‘Travel, Science & Natural History’ in 2012. The set of drawings was attributed by Dr. Jerry Losty as having been executed by Samuel Davis and /or Thomas and William Daniell. He recalls the Daniell’s stayed with Davis in Bhagalpur in 1789 – 90 while working on material for the Calcutta lottery. We believe most of the drawings are very read more
