Being auctioned: Methodist Discipline , c. 1808 Being auctioned at this time is ascarce early Methodist Disciple. 4” x 6 ½” tall. 211 pp. plus table of contents in the rear. Original leather boards with old black canvas spine cover over the original leather spine. The canvas is securing the boards. The back board appears to have been detached. The Title page is missing, but there is written in pencil on the bottom of the first page the date 1808 (also on a label on the spine) On the back paste down is a signature in very old script and dated 1809—see photo. Aside from the missing title page the contents are all secure and present. The pages are age mellowed typical of a book this age. There are occasional lines or notes in old script—but not many. Another signature appears faintly and in small letters at the very top of the first page. Also, at the end of the book are a couple pencil drawings of birds, the apparent art endeavors of a child long, long ago. A deeply spiritual work reflecting the deep piety of the early Wesleyan people, and their forms of government. A very nice early copy of the Methodist Discipline. This Discipline would no doubt have been in use in the days of the Second Great Awakening in which the Methodist denomination played a significant roll.
