This listing is for a fine large French Empire pair of gilt bronze ormolu bronze candelabras. These date between 1800 and 1810. The candelabras measures 27 inches or 69 cm high. The candelabras are quite exceptional and are certainly the best I have had the pleasure of owning. The casting of the bronze from top to bottom is exceptional even for the French. The gold gilding or ormolu is all original, and it too is exceptional. It has darkened slightly giving the candelabras a very understated richness. Each of the 5 candle cups are held up by foliate acanthus leaf candle arms, each with an individual bobache. Note, that one of these 10 bobaches is a replacement. These are in turn held up by a musical muse, each of which holds a lyre. Note that each of the muses is an individual and not a mirror copy of the other. Each of these stand on a ball over a very fancy French Empire decorated pedestal. These pedestals are decorated with swans, masks and more acanthus leaves along with other decorative motifs. The candelabras each have their original flame finial that sits in the top most candle cup. These can be removed if one wished to put the 5th candle in place. Often times these flame finials are missing having been lost over the 200 or so years. The candelabras are held together with hand cut nuts and studs. Their condition is immaculate read more
