RARE 1812 LEATHER NEWBURYPORT MASSACHUSETTS LEATHER NR Description: Samuel Lorenzo Knapp was a very early American writer. On Auction is an 1812 11x9 inch full leather copy of his The Pursuits of Literature, a Satirical Poem, in Four Dialogues, with Notes. The Sixteenth printing or edition. Printed at London, for Becket and Porter, Pall Mall. 1812. A very early example of native American literature. Knapp was born in Newburyport, Mass.542 pages, 11x9, full leather with the original boards and what looks like a replaced spine, probably from the 1920s or so. Gilt titles. Very rare. With a beautifully marbled page block. After graduation from Dartmouth College, Knapp studied law with Chief Justice Theophilus Parsons. He was admitted to the bar and in 1809 opened a law office in Newburyport. Within a few years he was selected as a representative to the General Court. During the War of 1812 he attained the rank of colonel and commanded a regiment of state militia in defense of the coast. In 1814 he married Mary Ann Davis of Boston. Two daughters were born of the marriage.Knapp gained some prominence as a fluent and popular orator and spoke at numerous Masonic and other meetings. Many of these early orations were published as pamphlets. Over the years he became a favorite "spread-eagle orator," addressing various lodges in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, and Massachusetts. On occasion he edited the Masonic section of the New England Galaxy and the Masonic magazine, and in 1828 he published The Genius of Masonry.Apparently unable to make a living as a lawyer, Knapp was imprisoned for debt in the Newburyport jail in 1816. While in prison he completed Extracts From the Journal of Marshal Soult, published in Newburyport the following year. As with his earlier books, it was not published under his own name.
