An original printed and manuscript completed nautical document from the District of Salem and Beverly, Massachusetts, dated May 19, 1815, certifies that 32 year old Manassah Goodhue is an American citizen and entitled to the protection of the United States government. Signed and sealed by William R. Lee [1745-1824], Collector of the Port of Salem and Beverly. He was an officer in the Revolutionary War, and a merchant and businessman. He was appointed Port Collector by Thomas Jefferson in 1802, and served in that office for many years.....Size 7" x 8 1/4", folds, hand made rag paper, blank reverse, very good condition for such a document which was carried on every voyage. These documents were very important during the period of the War of 1812, when British ship captains were impressing American seamen into service in the Royal Navy if they could not prove their citizenship...........Guaranteed original......$4.00 shipping............Over forty five years in business. 14 day return.
