§§§ A Sharp 1815/2 Capped Bust Half Dollar – KEY Date ! §§§
Description: This coin has plenty of detail and excellent eye appeal. On the obverse, the clasp is clearly visible, and about 2/3 of the hair detail is visible. The date and LIBERTY are sharp. The remnants of a “2” can be readily seen behind the numeral “5” in the date. Reverse sharpness is consistent with the obverse, with about 2/3 of the feather details visible in the eagle’s wings. The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” is full. The rims on both sides are full and smooth. The edge is lettered “FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR”, with stars between the letters. The color is medium silver gray, a little darker at the rims. The fields show some evidence of having been smoothed, possible evidence of an old cleaning or repair. In spite of this, the eye appeal is very good (please see pictures). Terms: Winning bidder please add $9.99 for USPS shipping. Your item will be shipped with insurance if it sells for more than $50. Numismatic Notes: Mount Tambora in the Dutch East Indies erupted explosively on April 5, 1815, killing upwards of 92,000 and propelling thousands of tons of aerosol gases into the upper atmosphere. These gases reflected sunlight and caused widespread cooling and heavy rains in 1816, including snows in June and July in the northern hemisphere, widespread crop failures, and subsequently famine. 1816 became known as the Year Without a Summer. The recorded mintage of half dollars in 1815 was only 47 thousand. There is only one variety known to collectors, and it is an overdate (5-over-2). This coin is known as O is the key date in the capped bust half dollar series. NOTE: This coin was removed from an NGC / NCS genuine holder that states "VF Details / Countermarked, Improperly Cleaned". The original NCS insert will accompany this coin to the winning bidder.
