Biblia, das ist: die Ganze Heilige Schrift Alten und Neuen Testaments. Nach der Deutschen Uebersetzung von Doctor Martin Luther. Johann Bär, Lancaster, Pa, 1819. Contemporary calf leather over thick and HEAVY wooden boards (without clasps; some scuffing, corners rounded, see more description below)
Folio sized, HEAVY and HUGE . First American German Bible printed in Folio! Following the short preface are five pages of subscribers, which is truly unique, listing all of the owners in the PA, OH, MD and upper northeast- find your relative !, then a biography of Luther, his original preface to the Old Testament, Francke's instructions for reading Scripture, and a list of the books. The previous German-American Bibles were all smaller, quarto Bibles that had been printed by the Saur family in Germantown, near Philadelphia, (1743, 1763, and 1776), by Gottlob Jungmann in Reading (1805), and by Friedrich Goeb in Somerset (1813). In 1819, the young 23-year-old Johann Bär (John Baer, or John Bear) of Lancaster County's printed this substantial work which was the largest German-language Bible printed in America to that date. Handsomely worn copy of this impressive piece of early American printing in its original binding of calf over wooden boards 2 volumes in 1. 2 beautiful engraved frontispieces by Jason Henry. The book has held up well for its age, and is still truly a unique and amazing specimen...the front board had detached itself a long time ago, and a previous owner has reattached the board with black tape, also the first 3-5 pages, including the front EP, title, and frontis have detached but are still present. The majority of the pages, I would say 9/10ths are clean, lightly warped with age, and uniform. The first group and the last 3-4 pages are chipped and browned more than the rest, but other than that its a solid find, and worthy of a museum with a tiny bit of attention. Only copies I can find anywhere range between 800$-1100$, hence this is a steal! Get it cheap today and own a true piece of early Pennsylvanian German History!
