Antique cut, bent, soldered and punch decorated sheet iron tin foot-warmer encased within it's original hardwood slat mortised and square nail constructed box frame retaining it's original chestnut brown paint, chipped carved owner's name, stenciled matching owner's name on the inside of the door , interior tin coal tray and attractive hand carved handle expansion (to reduce bruised knuckles while carrying the heater when walking in the woods) on the top at the handle and retaining it's original old dry surface, as found. We found this in the shed chamber. Attractive, primitive, old and a long used classic, this foot-warmer is notably different from many we have found over the years. Specifically, the wood frame and the tin warmer box are either homemade or locally made. We usually encounter production, factory style manufactured foot-warmers. These usually are the wood cases that have lathe turned corner posts and are joined with a less crude, neater nail job. Additionally, this case has the two owner marks; chip carved and stenciled, suggesting attention to ownership by the maker. This is a wonderful and complete foot-warmer with a true personal feel to it's make. It is cold in rural Maine , especially when one is miles from anyw The old myth that a foot-warmer saw service only with the ladies and only in church brakes down completely in rural Maine . The reality was that these were a portable general use heater found in wagons on the road, cold bedrooms, chilly evenings by the fireplace and even keeping food warm in the field, during spring planting, at the end of the row. Any time someone wanted to bring heat or fire anyw, these did the job. The further "out" a "place" was, the more likely these saw regular & varied use. They were used prominently from the late 18th Century through the first quarter of the 19th but in rural Maine, one still encountered them giving heat in the 1870's. Our feeling is that this particular warmer never saw usage inside a church ever but was used by males in the homestead when they went into the woods for winter logging and season hunting to keep tea or coffee "warm". That word warm actually means "not frozen". This is true rural Maine "foot-warmer" that was, in fact, intended to be a portable box heater from the day it was made. It is very attractive, fully complete and in fine condition. It is the best one we have found in quite a while. Should one wish, it may be used again and would function perfectly. Very good as found condition. This one has been in the barn since it's last use, probably for hunting around 1900. It is in very good condition with no damage and only moderate and appropriate exterior usage wear to the wooden case, oxidized surfaces to the tin and interior usage soiling. Additionally, on the coal tray, t is a drip of old wax. This is not a flaw for a simple candle placed in the tray would easily provide enough heat to keep tea or coffee "hot" (enough) for a hunter or logger. It is lightly soiled; we have done no cleaning except to lightly brush it off. Right out of the shed chamber, it has appropriate surface oxidation, wear and soiling for it's age and from it's old Maine estate residence. Please see photographs. As found this past March in an estate in Black Point , Maine . Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our othe...
