This folded lettersheet / stampless letter has a circular date stamp for BALTIMORE MD JUL 19, an 18~ cent rate, and is addressed to Mrs. Susan O. Mayer, Careof Colo. Thos. Beverly Randolph, Jamestown, Prince Edward county, Virginia, via Richmond, Va., and is a three and a half page letter written by L. Mayer. The headline is Baltimore 19th July 1822. From the book "History of Baltimore City and County ...." , by John Thomas Scharf: "Lewis Mayer, who died in the prime of a brilliant manhood, was educated at one of the best continental universities, and was a cultivated and accomplished gentleman. He was no less noted for his business talent than for his mental culture, and was among the pioneers in developing the anthracite coal region of Pennsylvania, w he and many of his relatives were large landholders. The father of Lewis Mayer was Christian Mayer, who filled until his death the office of consul-general of Wurtemberg, and was well known to the citizens of half a century ago as one of the most successful merchants of Baltimore. Christian Mayer was also the father of Charles F. Mayer, the distinguished lawyer, and of Col. Brantz Mayer, the litterateur, who is known wver American literature is read. Lewis Mayer was married in Lancaster, PA, to his relative, Susan O. Mayer, daughter of Christopher Mayer, of that place, an opulent merchant, who represented his district for years in the Senate of his native State, and died t, leaving a large fortune to his children." Some abstracts:"... at the same time I am distressed to observe the sufferings you have all undergone on account of beeing so much bitten, but my dear we must submit to smaller evils rather than undergo greater ones, and the insects may have had good intentions in what they did by occasioning the bad humours ..." "I should like to have had a peep at you, and have borne a part of your sufferings by assisting you in hobbling as you say & contributing to soothe your pains, tho' as these plagues are particularly partical to the sweetness of my blood, we probably should have been obliged to sympathize with each other ..." "I sincerely hope that you are now quite yourself again, as well as mother & the dear little ones, poor little Louis Henry it appears must always be afflicted ...." "Tell Kissy I am very much pleased by his letter & glad to hear that he is a good boy ..." "... gratified to receive your dear lines of July 13th which you sent to Richmond by the servant." "I wrote John to Fredericksburg that I hsould send him accordingly, which letter he received t and should have written Beverly afterwards fully on the subject." "The expenses of the horse from this place to Richmond (16$) I paid & John settled ..." "Our city continues yet very healthy, more so than for some years, except for children, of which many are sick & a great many of all [????] to the diseases usual at this season." "Our neighborhood is very healthy but a great many persons leave town from all parts on acct of the intense heat. I find it so warm for these some days that I have been obliged to carry an umbrella ........ and am taking cream of Tartar & Tamarinds in order my blood cool from which I experience benefit & think it very good." "My father & mother & all else are very well with the exception of Brantz he has had a fever for some time." "Mrs. Welsh ... I saw her off at the Steamboat at her request." "T is no need for a vapour Bath for me." Lots more writing, more names and news. I see brief mention of Charlestown, VA, Sharon dale Springs, Ellicotts Mills tucked in t (it would take time for me to find these mentions again, and I'm limited in time to typing up the above abstracts, so I'm unable to give further details in reply to inquiries about this letter).See my other auctions for more Mayer letters.Condition of the letter rates on the poor side due to stains, which obscures several words.
