Ca 1822 Seth Thomas Pillar & Scroll Original & Working This is a very nice early Seth Thomas Pillar and Scroll form wood works clock. It has the original finish, keys, pendulum with wood rating nut, diamond shaped bone keyhole escutcheon, and weights. I believe the upper tablet is also original. It has the slight bow these clocks require to fit the movement in behind the glass without the hands rubbing. This type of glass has not been available for over 100 years. The lower tablet has a very nice reverse painted scene. Unfortunately this was damaged at some point in time. My guess is that the clock was transported with the weights and pendulum attached. The glass has been stabilized from behind with some kind of adhesive. It seems very secure. Inside the door along the top edge is a signature of some sort, and what appears to be the number 114. I have included an enhanced picture of this, but still can not really make out what it says. The clock keeps near perfect time. The E. Terry patent type movement was worked on in 1978, and the repair slip is included. All that was done to get this clock running was to apply scant drops of synthetic oil to the verge and front escape pivot. Then the weights were hung and pendulum set in motion. Neither the beat or pendulum length required adjustment. The dial may have been altered from the original to show the escape wheel. The patina around this escapement opening looks very similar to that around the hole for the hands. This is an indication that if it were modified, it happened a long time ago. The effect is to look very similar to off-center strap type movements of the 1816 - 1820 period. See Tran Duy Ly's Seth Thomas Clocks and Movements, 3rd edition, pages 657- 660. T are some other damage points to comment about. All of these occurred and repairs were implemented before I acquired the piece. The door hinge pins have been replaced with oversize pieces, probably due to wood shrinkage. The lower pin has applied pressure to the veneer and it is a little bulged. Both leg pieces appear to have been broken off and re-glued. The top scrolls and chimneys were detached when this piece was purchased. They have been re-applied using hide glue. As is so common with these delicate clocks, the two upper scrolls had broken and were glued back together before I received the clock. Please look over the pictures carefully. The door lock has been disabled. It still contains the latch piece, but t is no barrel or mechanism to move the latch. As such, this key with tassel are primarily decorative. The key will act as a method to open the door. This clock will also be avaliable for sale or local pickup at the Cabot Mill Antique shop in Brunswick, Maine. Overall dimensions are 31" tall to top of highest finial (29" to top of scroll work) 16-1/2" wide, and 4" deep. Shipping to continental US will be $80 and insurance is required.
