Here is an original Model 1816� (technically M 1822) Harpers Ferry full length 42 inch Civil War muzzle loader barrel excluding the tang.� The barrel is straight and true but the bore has the typical old rust from long years of neglect and is now a collector's piece that cannot be made to fire.� I think you can see the type of rust in the photo of the muzzle. The barrel� was made as a flintlock in 1825 and converted to percussion just before the war by the national arsenals with the "Belgian" or cone conversion. It retains its complete unaltered antique patina with the exception of the upper barrel at the wood line where Laurel Mountain Forge brown was used to straighten up the edges of the original patina brown. It has inspectors marks and the small Harper's Ferry Eagle. There is no VP proof and there is no evidence it ever had it. The bayonet lug was filed down to make a front sight.� This along with the other 1825 Harper's Ferry parts I have listed came on a badly trashed stock that is long gone. The forend of the stock had been converted to look like a Kentucky rifle with pins instead of barrel bands. Three very shallow slots were made in the bottom of the barrel for handmade thin folded steel under barrel lugs for the pins. I have pictured these.
