Postal History Excellent early maritime content in this detailed 2 page stampless folded letter written March 30, 1828 by the noteworthy merchant and slave trader John D'Wolf at the Island of Mantanzas, Cuba and sent to Thomas Melville, merchant in Boston who also participated in the Boston Tea Party, served in politics and was an officer in the American Revolutionary War ! In this letter, D'Wolf explains his next voyage from Cuba to St Petersburg, Russia will take an additional month due to a required 40 day quarantine upon arrival in Russia ! He describes the quarantine as a "cruel detention...." I believe the Russians required quarantines to try and stop any spread of cholera from tropical locations. Therefore, D'Wolf says he won't arrive back in Boston as soon as he'd hoped. He asks Melville to send him a batch of Boston newspapers to a merchant in St Petersburg that will make sure he gets them. Rest of letter is merchant business - interesting to read and study !! Letter contains a red oval SHIP 6 arc marking and "Pr Magnolia" manuscript, indicating the letter traveled from Cuba aboard the Magnolia. Letter fully intact and in good shape. Enlarged scans provided for your research benefit. See links below for more info about both D'Wolf (from Rhode Island) and Melville: /rhodeisland-philatelic/rhodeisland/stampless16.htm /wiki/Thomas_Melvill_(American_patriot ) Terms $1.00 postage in the United States, and only $ 2.00 elsewhere.
