Remarkable early 3 page stampless folded letter written by Eli Hathaway - a merchant from Livermore, Maine who writes his wife aboard a ship docked in Point Guadeloupe (French West Indies....) - letter was written "August 12th AD 1828... Presume "Point Guadeloupe" is "Point a Pitre." Letter was sent to the writer's wife Clarissa Hathaway (in care of his own name, Eli Hathaway) with a BATH, MAINE transit postmark and I believe a SHIP 12 cent manuscript rate mark. Hathaway writes about conditions aboard the ship, he seems to be a cook and talks about the ovens, going a shore with a few dollars for some revelry but says he doesn't do that any more. Writes Bible verses where King Solomon condems sleeping with prostitutes.... "old King Solomon says rejoice with the wife of thy youth let her be as unpleasant (?) let her breast satisfy thee at all times, and be thous ravished always with her love and why wilt thou be ravished with a strange woman and embrace the bosom of a stranger... " He goes on to assure his wife that he is remaining faithful ! He goes on to write some poetry, homesick comments etc... This has to be a rare early ship usage from the French West Indies to Maine !! Letter fully intact and in good shape - some age toning and normal wear & tear for age.
