Here is a great coin I found relic hunting twenty or so years ago in the old Midlothian Coal Mines in Midlothian VA. Operations started in these mines as early as the 1750s and continued until the early 1900s. During the Civil War ma ny Confederate troops guar ded these mines as it was the Confederate's main so urce of coa l. Most al l the arsenals and foundries in the south were run by coal from the Midlothian Coal Mines . I hunted in this area for several years until modern day construction began to take it away. Over the years I have dug Spanish coins as early as 1750's and 60's, and American large cent coins dated as early as 1793. I also found lots of script coins w hich were used when the mines were operat ed by the R. S. Burrows Company. Not only was it a great place for finding coins but my friends and I also found numerous Confederate bu ttons and buckles. This also was the site of the first gravity powered railroad I believe in the United States in 1831. It ran from the Midloth ian Mines to Richmond by gravity and the em pty cars were pulled back to the mines by mules. I have several more coins I found in th is area that I'll be list ing soon. This is a good example of the 1829 capped LIBERTY bus t half dime. The word LIBERTY is clearly readable on the ca p. There are some scratches and the re appears to be a dent on the read more
