This folded lettersheet / stampless letter has a manuscript postal marking for Lexington Va., Nov. 5th, an 18 ¾ cents rate, and is addressed to Miss Frances S. Griggs, Charles Town, Jefferson County, Virginia, and is a three page letter, with a little writing on the fourth page, written by Betsey G. Bowyer. The dateline is Thorn Hill November 4th 1830. The postal markings, which includes the handwritten name of the town, on the front cover area of the lettersheet are in the handwriting of the local Post Master. It would be fun to research and find out the name of the Post Master at that time. This is one of two letters which I have of this correspondence. Whether or not there are other letters out there 'somewhere', I don't know. See my other auctions for the other Lexington letter. Some abstracts: "... to give you a long and I hope not an uninteresting detail of every thing that has happened since last you heard from us." ".... we were at several very agreeable parties in Lexington ..." ".... M Jonston & Mr. Taylor who came home with us .... Henry Calwell & Mr Powell (a son of Alfred Powell's of Winchester perhaps your Pa is acquainted with him) came for us to go over to the Springs ..." "... take Frances Fielding Mary Louisa and Mic to the Springs, I went as far as Bottetourt with them to see my friend Juliet Taylor ..." read more
