I am very unfamiliar with instruments of this type, as I am a watch and clock guy, so I don’t much about this except for the light research that I did to educate myself. If you have questions or issues, please, it is imperative that you DO contact me before bidding and please DO ask earlier than later. I may or may not be around on the day of the auction. So from what I can see, this is a sextant and is clearly marked Spencer Browning & Rust, London . From the information I could find, these were made in London from 1724 - 1840 when the name was changed to Spencer Browning after the death of Ebanezer Rust. Spencer Browning continued to make Sextants under the name Spencer Browning from 1840 - 1870. So this places the age to be prior to 1840. All the parts seem to be there except one screw on the square mirror as seen in the picture. All the colored filters, lenses and even the mirror silvering are intact. I see no broken or damaged parts. I did polish the vernier scale and all the glass to examine filters and read markings. One thing I don’t see is any real corrosion or green oxidation. The box is intact, but shows age. No papers or markings on the case. As a clock guy, I would love to take this apart and polish it, but I am unsure if that would ruin historical value nor do I want to mess with the soft brass screws unless I were to keep it. This would be a special labor of love for some collector. This item will be carefully packaged and shipped to the buyers address. Item is sold in 'as found' Condition. I also found this article about what looks to be this very same instrument and was as follows with a link also. http://gallery.usgs.gov/photos/07_22_2009_j51Qi76Hgb_07_22_2009_17 Quintant Sextant or Lattice Sextant Description: This instrument was manufactured by Spencer, Browning & Rust, London . A sextant is used for measuring the altitude of the sun or another celestial body; such measurements can then be used to determine the observer's geographical position or for other navigational, surveying, or astronomical applications. Dating from the 1820s-1850s, this instrument is among the earliest objects in the U.S. Geological Survey museum collection. Object ID: USGS-000220 Also this museum site http://www./collections/explore/object.cfm?ID=NAV1195I will ship international. Please ask questions before you bid OK everybody, I added a couple of photos of the mirror. From what I can see and know, this mirror though not absolutely perfect in every way, it seems to me to be 95%. Being a watch and clock guy, thats my opinion. I do know what perfection is, but I wonder what this item would be from the factory, I doubt it would be perfect anyway and If I were to remove it and clean it in more detail, I could probably bring it up to 98 - 99%. I also uploaded all of the pictures to my Photobucket account, You can probably get a larger view of the pictures there and maybe two more. Ebay limits the number of pictures to 12. The web address to all the pictures is as follows. Feel free to look around. If anybody needs someting specific, then feel free to ask. So please be fully informed and bid large. I hate to sell my family heirlooms but hope this item helps save my home, but it is what it is. Thanks for looking. Best regards /albums/tt48/onerighthand/sextant/ I just uploaded 25 or so more pictures to my Photobucket account. These are a lot of more random detailed pictures. One of the pictures show the vernier scale prior to myself taking a jewelers polish to the scale to better show the name and the scale itself. Now any item of this age surely will have normal and expected age and imperfections, and this sextant is no exception. The item is in as found condition except for my polishing the scale and cleaning the glass. NO steel woo...
