Staffordshire soft paste clay body tankard with green, red & black Adams Rose style hand painted brushstroke under glaze decoration under pearlware glaze in good original condition, as found . England , 1830, probably earlier. Guaranteed old and original; this is not a fake or reproduction. Actual weight 1 lbs. 4 3/4" tall to the rim top by 3 7/8" base diameter. Staffordshire soft paste clay body tankard with green, red & black Adams Rose style hand painted brushstroke under glaze decoration under pearlware glaze in good original condition, as found. No maker's mark. Scarce form. This charming tankard is an early form with an early "Adam Rose" style decoration. We were very pleased to find this in the estate for tankards of any style, era and medium have become scarce. This tankard had been rescued by the matron of the estate from her attic in the 1950's when she took over the household and decided to decorate the homestead with antiques. She dutifully report to us the precious moment of her discovering the tankard among a box of old china in her attic, her washing it, her discovery of the Adams Rose decoration and her ever-after prominent display of the tankardâe¦ on the mantleâe¦ of the front parlor fireplace. T is was when we first viewed the estate and we did not disturb it's place of honor until after the matron had moved out. From the mantle it has passed to the truck, to storage and nowâe¦ to ebay. We are sure the tankard was purchased and in use at the farm by the 1830's and probably arrived in the 1820's. Until we lifted it off the mantel, it had always been in the home. The old damage is minimal and does not detract from the bright eye appeal of this classic form. Very attractive. Very good as found condition. T is an old 2 ½" hairline crack down the side at 9:00 . Pleasingly this is only very faintly visible on the outside while it is easily noted on the inside. On the bottom t is a 1 ¼" old browned hairline at the rim edge at 6:00 that shows on the inside bottom too. T, on the bottom also is an old ¾" inner rim chip at 12:00 under the handle. To the left of this, at 11:00 , is original black paint under the glaze that is an original decoration flaw and is NOT damage . T is lightest wear, lightest age toning and lightest browning to the whole tankard that is appropriate to the age and usage of the tankard. Otherwise the tankard has no further damage and is in pleasing old original untouched and as found condition. Right off of the front parlor fireplace mantel, the tankard has lightest estate soiling from it's estate residence. Please see photographs. As found last August in a Montville , Maine estate . Seeking things fresh found in attics? Please see our other listings from this estate. This was on the mantel in the front parlor. We have done nothing to this at all; it is just as we found it. It looks like a good one to us! We offer this attractive & early Staffordshire Adams Rose style decorated tankard for $4.99 NR.
