1835-1838 Paterson Family Letter Archive ~ New Jersey Descendants of William Paterson (1745-1806) - Constitution Signer; Governor Lot of (9) handwritten family letters, 1835-1838, sent to William Paterson (1817-1899) of New Brunswick, New Jersey. Paterson, a future lawyer and judge, was a grandson of US Constitutution signer and NJ Governor, William Paterson (1745-1806).The correspondents include Paterson's mother, J[ane] E[liza] Paterson, brothers Andrew and Stephen (William's twin), sister C.B., uncle A. Bell, and friend, W[alton] W. Evans. Most from Perth Amboy, NJ; plus a few from Troy [New York.]The letters, about 1-2 pages each, contain personal content. All letters with hand carried covers (one postally sent.)An interesting letter from twin brother, S[tephen] V. R. Paterson, Troy, March 11, 1836, reads in part:"Many a time and oft have I reflected upon the duties of an engineer, but I have at last arrived at this unanimous conclusion that it [is] exactly like going to College only upon [a] more refined system of killing time."" I've been fifteen weeks to day improved in nothing except it be playing cards and smoking segars as wise as a jackass and as learned as a bigoted fool."Condition: General wear and soiling.
