! Ornithological Dictionary of British Birds By Colonel G. Montagu and James Rennie 1831 - London - Hurst, Chance and Co 9" by 5.5", lx, 592pp DETAILS An informative dictionary of British birds with a number of elegant engraved illustrations. Second edition. George Montagu (1753 – 20 June 1815) was an English naturalist. He is best known for this Ornithological Dictionary and his contributions to early knowledge of British birds. He showed that many previously accepted species were invalid, either because they were birds in summer or winter plumage or males and females of the same species. His study of harriers resulted in the discovery that the Montagu's Harrier was breeding in southern England. He was also involved in the first British records of Cirl Bunting, Cattle Egret, Little Gull and Gull-billed Tern. With a plan of study and many new articles and original observations by James Rennie. Previous owner's inscription to front free endpaper of one Jane Landon. CONDITION In a cloth covered binding. Externally, sound with bumping and marks to boards. Internally, binding loosening slightly in places. Generally bright with light foxing to endpapers and the odd spot throughout.
