Postal History Awesome history in this circa 1832 stampless folded letter from Cayuga, New York - written by R. Hannibal and sent to Mr. J.P. Curtis at Murray Post Office in Orleans County, NY. No year date on this letter but based on the content, I am nearly certain it was written in 1832. That's because the writer describes a visit by HENRY CLAY who was running for President in 1832. He gives a marvelous description of how close he got to Clay, facial features etc.... "we had our village awaked to life by the announcation that Henry Clay was in town every one of course rushed to see him and I with them also, I was much disappoint in the (?) of Hon Gen He is what I should call an inferior looking man, I could describe him exactly if I had room but I have not, I stood quite near him to saw his head when his hat was off and took sharp survey of every point. He was escroted through Seneca Co by some gents from S. Falls and they wished some time a party from Auburn that was to some great expense in carriages to Friend Knaggs succeeded in getting then aford said gents to get him ride with to let ride with Auburn gents he Mr. Clay arose in the carriage and addressed them in this word, Gentlemen I am like the man that had two wives... he loved the dear creatures much very much but when they was together he did not know which to serve first and so with me I don't know which to choose nor do I want to be the disappointment of the gentlemen my friends of Auburn so he got in and rode with them went to Auburn and delivered a speech 1 hour long amojng their loud cheers and bellowings...." /pages/h321.html Writer goes on to talk about more mundane things... health, farming news, raising chickens, ripe apples, growing cherries, complains he hasn't heard from home and thinks his relatives have gone on a "sea coasting" trip aboard a vessel....
