Gould Printed by Hullmandel Original antique Wood Lark stone lithograph with fine hand coloring from Birds of Europe , 1832-1837. John Gould (1804-1881) was an incredibly successful and prolific artist, naturalist, publisher and all around businessman. He was responsible for 21 different sets of books totaling 49 volumes that contained 2,999 hand colored lithographed plates. It is generally agreed that Gould made the original sketch for each of the plates and then often gave it to another artist who painted the water color from which the stone lithograph was made. He was intimately involved overseeing every step of the process from the original sketch to the finished painting to the preparation of the stone to the printing of the lithograph to the final hand coloring of the plate.
