This large and impressive (20x22) American Quaker schoolgirl sampler is in excellent condition, and features most of the distinctive motifs and imagery Quaker examples are known for......the Quaker 8 pointed star, paired birds ,swan, inverted floral sprigs, queen stitch strawberries,Quaker basket, identifiable Quaker block alphabet, and of course the pious Quaker verse titled "Extract" which reads.."Enough has heaven indulged of joys below,To tempt our tolerance in this loved retreat,Enough has heaven ordained of useful woe,To make us languish for a happier seat"......And then below our talented Quaker schoolgirl signed her inscription with both her birthdate and completion date...."SARAH S. SQUIRE BORN SEPTEMBER 27 1824....WROUGHT FEBRUARY 1835". Advanced collectors know that Quakers schools throughout America share similar formats, but genealogical study points to a young girl with this surname (Squiers-Squires) born in Virginia rather than Pennsylvania in the specified year of 1824....possibly the area of Loudon County w I have seen similar examples highlighted by the identical compressed Quaker block alphabet and corner placed rosesprig. I am hoping that the expert sampler genealogists on ebay, who have access to Virginia records, can find this schoolgirl as a result of her birthdate stitched right on her needlework. The sampler has endless merits in addition to the probable Virginia provenance; boasting its original frame with very ripply glass, very fine contrast and resolution in person, perfect silkwork, and sterling condition...... Conserved on acid free board vivid colors abound; as baby blue silk accents catch the eye in the Quaker star, the center of the inverted floral buds, breasts of the paired birds, alphabet, and horizontal band.....with green and salmon highlights found in the 3 delicate queen stitch motifs, inverted tulip,Quaker basket, and large tree. The entire presentation and format are the essence of American Quaker schoolgirl embroidery, and with a very modest wholesale reserve, this fabulous sampler is an affordable and outstanding example for serious Quaker collectors
