I just purchased some more Fine and Rare Old Books fresh out of an old estate this past week, including a number of Old Books owned by MARIUS SCHOONMAKER (Kingston, NY: 1811-1894. U.S. Rep. as Whig from N.Y. 1851-53) and CORNELIUS D. WESTBROOK D.D. (1782-1858) as well as relatives of the same. I will be listing them over the next week or so as time permits. Here are two of these books. It is a FIRST EDITION COMPLETE 2-VOL. SET of "MEMOIRS OF AARON BURR. WITH MISCELLANEOUS SELECTIONS FROM HIS CORRESPONDENCE." by MATTHEW L. DAVIS. New York: Published by Harper & Brothers. 1836 (Volume 1- first printing thus). 1837 (Volume 2). What makes this Set special is Volume 1 has a COMPLIMENTARY CLOSE OF A LETTER WITH NICE AARON BURR SIGNATURE CUT SQUARE PASTED ATOP FRONTISPIECE PORTRAIT OF BURR. It reads "I am his(?) with much respect, Your Ob't Serv't, A. Burr". Lovely clear autograph. Books are Ex-Lib. of MARIUS SCHOONMAKER (Kingston, NY: 1811-1894) with his name in ink along top of both Title Pages and both Front Endpapers (4 times). See paragraph below for more info on Marius Schoonmaker. Books are 8-7/8" X 5-3/4". Still bound in their Original Purple Cloth Bindings with Original Paper Title Labels on Spines. Texts are complete with 2 Frontispiece Portraits and Fold-out Fascimilie Gen. Montgomery Letter in Volume 1. Volume 1 has 436pp.. Volume 2 has 449pp. + 32pp. of great Harper & Brothers Advertisements in rear. Condition: Decent copies of this rare set. Bindings and texts are all together well. Most all of the paper spine labels intact. Interior pages with some spotting and staining to various degrees with some pages mostly clean. Exterior cloth with some stains and blemishes and fading to purple color, but cloth with almost no fraying to edges with exception of top corner of front of Volume 2. The cut square Signature Note measures 4-1/2" x 1-3/16". It is pasted onto the page. The paper autograph is on looks to be 19thC vintage as opposed to 18thC. I have no background on the Letter Close. Books have been untouched in estate storage for many years. AARON BURR (1756-1836) was Third Vice-President of the United States under Pres. Thomas Jefferson. Mostly known for his duel with Alexander Hamilton which resulted in Hamilton's death, as well as his trial for Treason. Many other intriquing aspects to Burr's life as well. MARIUS SCHOONMAKER was born in Kingston, NY. Graduated from Yale in 1830 and admitted to the bar in 1833, practicing law in Kingston. He became U.S. Rep. as a Whig from N.Y. from 1851-1853. After declining his candicacy for reelection, he resumed the practice of law in Kingston. He assumed many prominent offices in Kingston. He wrote "The History of Kingston, New York.." in 1888. Reasonable starting price with no other reserve. I will guarantee Burr autograph to be authentic and as described as with all my items or full refund. Nice piece of Kingston, NY memorabilia as well. UPS Ground, USPS Media Mail (which can be slow at times) or faster Priority Mail shipping options available. INSURANCE included in the shipping totals. Look for my other Marius Schoonmaker early books I will be listing as well. See listing for payment and shipping details. Feel free to email me with any questions. Thanks for looking!
